Program for seniors highlight of Falls Prevention Awareness Week

Gov. Carney proclaims this week Falls Prevention Week in Delaware.

The number ofseniors over 64 admitted to Delaware hospitals for treatment of fall injuries rose from 2,007 in 2013 to 2,239 in 2016, according to the Delaware Trauma System Registry.

 

 

To encourage Delawareans to support fall prevention strategies, Gov. John Carney (D) and Lt. Governor Bethany Hall-Long (D) have proclaimed this week as Falls Prevention Awareness Week in Delaware.  

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says falls among older adults are the leading cause for injury deaths and non-fatal injuries, including hip and brain injuries.

 

The National Council on Aging will celebrate its 10th annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day on Friday, with a free public falls prevention program. It will be held at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover from noon until 1 p.m.; those attending, will learn how to avoid falls.

 

Mrs. Delaware 2017, Ivana Hamilton, will attend Friday’s program in an effort to boost awareness of the issue.
