Multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to Kellogg’s cereal

Delaware’s Division of Public Health is warning residents about a recall of Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal. ";s:

Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal is being recalled in several states, due to a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella.

Delaware is not listed in the recall, but Delaware’s Division of Public Health (DPH) still advises against eating the cereal.

73 people in 31 states have reported becoming ill, with 24 being hospitalized. DPH spokeswoman Andrea Wojcik says that got state health officials’ attention.

“We’re sharing the recall information out of an abundance of caution. At this time, it doesn’t affect Delaware. However, most of the states on the Eastern seaboard, including our neighboring states, have had people who have become ill as a result of eating this particular Honey Smacks cereal. So we can’t be sure that somebody in our state doesn’t have this recalled cereal in their cabinets," said Wojcik.

Wojcik notes no deaths linked to the cereal have been reported at this time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports illnesses started between March 3rd and May 28th. On June 14, the Kellogg Company recalled the 15.3-ounce and 23-ounce packages of Honey Smacks.

“We’re recommending that if you come across Honey Smacks cereal you check the labels to see if it’s recalled. If it’s recalled don’t eat it; not only don’t eat it, but throw out the cereal or return it to your retailer for a refund,” said Wojcik.

The CDC says people normally get sick from Salmonella 12 to 72 hours after swallowing the germ and experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can last longer and be more severe.
