Memorial Day travel volume at highest level since 2005

Delaware Public Media
Despite high gas prices, Triple-A Mid-Atlantic estimates more than 115,000 Delawareans are expected to travel 50 miles or more over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Many motorists are already traveling for the long Memorial Day weekend and they’ll have plenty of company.

AAA Mid-Atlantic Travel projects travel volume this holiday weekend will be at its highest level this year since 2005.

And AAA spokesman Ken Grant says this is the fourth year in a row it has gone up.

“We are looking at about a 5% increase in Delaware of people traveling 50 miles or more over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. We’re looking at about 115,000 Delawareans that plan on hitting the road, either literally in their car, or traveling by air, by train, and even some by boat,” Grant said.

Grant says the holiday period is defined as Thursday through Monday, May 28th.

He points out that the 89-percent of Delaware residents traveling by car this weekend are not deterred by the recent spike in gas prices.

And he offers an explanation as to why people seem undeterred by high fuel costs.

“So what we’re seeing is a combination of factors. We have a pretty good economy going right now; people are feeling confident about that. Also, kind of a cabin fever affect; you know this past winter just seemed to drag on and on,” said Grant.

In Delaware, you will currently pay about $2.95 per gallon for gas; $3.01 per gallon in New Jersey and in Pennsylvania, gas is averaging $3.12 per gallon.
