Two former University of Delaware volleyball coaches are suing the school over their dismissal last fall.
In two separate federal lawsuits, former head coach Bonnie Kenny and assistant coach Cindy Gregory claim they were fired last October based on their age, sexual orientation and marital status.
Kenny and Gregory are both in the 50’s and were married in 2013.
The two coaches also claim their equal protection and due process rights were violated.
The school has never offered any details related to the decision to dismiss Kenny and Gregory, though in their suits the two coaches say they were suspended after a player’s father complained his daughter had been mistreated. They add the school also pointed to three consecutive losing seasons and losing record when they were fired as reasons for their dismissal.
The suits list UD, its former Human Resources Director Thomas LaPenta and Athletic Director Chrissy Rawak as defendants.
Kenny and Gregory are seeking a litany of damages, including lost pay, back pay, and compensation for damage to their reputations – as well as punitive damages against LaPenta and Rawak.
