Delaware Democrats kicked of the 2018 election cycle over the weekend at Cape Henlopen State Park.
Members of the state’s Congressional delegation and as well as top state Democratic leaders spoke about unity at the party’s jamboree. Democrats nationwide were torn last year between Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential race.
But Gov. John Carney (D) says Democrats also need to focus on local issues like education. He said he visited a middle school in Wilmington that was disorganized and students lacked learning opportunities.
“So, when I hear about all this stuff that’s happening outside our state that’s important for us to push and push hard against, I’m reminded everyday of all the work all of us do to make sure every child in our state has a fighting chance,” he said.
The entire Delaware House is up for re-election next year.
Democrats in the Senate currently hold a one-seat majority. But Sen. Brian Bushweller (D-Dover), is retiring at the end of his term next year, opening the door for Republicans to take control of the state Senate.
